What are we doing this year?
We begin Year 6 by studying The Wolves of Currumpaw in English. This was a new book last year which the class loved so I am sure you will really enjoy reading it and learning about The Old West. Our geography and history subjects link closely to this text. In geography we will be studying the landscape in Midwest America and the impact that European settlers had on this; it is fascinating to learn about how the influx on Europeans altered the landscape. Our history focus is the development of transportation. We will not only learn about how the development of new modes of transport enabled global trade and travel, but we will also learn the impact that transport had - and continues to have - right here in Middlewich.
In maths, we will begin by consolidating our place value knowledge before moving on to learning the calculation methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Please see the bottom of the page for some helpful videos showing our methods and remember you can access these and practise any time. Hopefully you are all confident with your timestables up to 12 x 12 by now but remember to keep using Times Table Rockstars to keep your tables fresh in your mind. Our first science topic is classifying living things. We will be exploring the many living things that we are lucky to have in our school grounds. In RE this term, we will be listening to a range of gospels and discussing what readers may learn from them whilst in art we will be learning and creating our own sculptures. We will also be continuing to broaden our Fench vocabulary with Madame Miller and developing our musical skills with the help of Mrs Biggs.
What are we doing for the rest of the year?
Look below to see some of the topics we will be covering this year. You can view the full curriculum on the curriculum page. Aswell as learning lots of exciting, new topics in Year 6.
- Light and parts of the eye

- The heart and how it functions
- Dragons' Den and the designing, creating and marketing of our own products
- Landscapes and L S Lowry

- Recapping the spelling rules we have learnt at primary school
- As well as reading and working on lots of exciting new books including Room 13, Clockwork, Survivors, Hansel and Gretel and many more...
Wow! What a lot of exciting topics we have to cover this year. We'll certainly be kept busy!
As the flagship year group we need to be responsible learners. Remember to use TTR, Purple Mash and all of the other helpful websites that we can access to support our learning!
I am really looking forward to us all working hard, doing our best and having a fantastic year together.
